Day 1:

Australia 6 vs Vancouver Desparados (CAN) 0
Goal Scorers: Sam Boer 1, Saxon Hooper 1, Tracy Ivin 1, Kerry Baxter 1, Peter Yabsley 1, Dane Hansen 1
Aussie Game MVP: Peter Yabsley
Story: First up we played the Vancouver Desparados, who reportedly believed they would finish 1st or 2nd in our pool.. we got over them 6-0, with 6 different goal scorers, in a great start to the tournament.

Peter Yabsley faces off vs the Vancouver Desparados.

Australia 2 vs Newfoundland Bullets (CAN) 6
Goal Scorers: Saxon Hooper, Sam Boer
Aussie Game MVP: Kerry Baxter
Story: Our second game for the day was against the host team Newfie Bullets.. We went in 2-2 at halftime but some bad passing and defensive errors saw us drop the game 6-2. Really one that got away !!

Tracy Ivin gets aquainted with the locals vs Newfie Bullets while Dane Hansen watches on.

Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony was fantastic. The locals turned up to pack out the very large Pepsi Centre (the main arena). We came out in an Olympic style athelete parade to the song Land Down Under by Men at Work and got a massive ovation. Was very special and one of very many highlights of the trip for me.

Day 2:

Australia 3 vs Castlenut Knights (USA) 0
Goal Scorers: Shane Webster 1, Saxon Hooper 1, Peter Yabsley 1
Aussie Game MVP: Shane Webster
Story: The next day saw us scrape past the CastleNut Knights by 3-0, not really our best game, but a win is a win.

Australia 0 vs Cabano (CAN) 4
Aussie Game MVP: Kerry Baxter
Story: The second game for the day was vs the current world champions Cabano from Quebec, Canada.. so far they had defeated all three teams they had played by 8-12 goals and hadnt had a goal scored against them. We revved up and vowed to make sure we werent mercied (once the lead reached 8 the game is essentially over (mercy rule invoked) with no further scores counted). In probably our favourite game of the comp we scrambled and defended until we could hardly breathe, not enough however as Cabano scored 4 goals on us.... still they mercied all other teams in our pool without conceding a goal.. and we even came close to scoring a couple ourselves .. so even though we lost were kind of satisfied.. however we know we have to do better in the future..

Day 3:

Australia 3 vs Japan 0
Goal Scorers: Derek Turner 2, Kerry Baxter
Game MVP: Derek Turner
Story: Our final round game was vs Japan.. we needed to win to finish third in our pool, a loss would see us 4th and up against eventual winnners Briquetal from Quebec in the quarter finals. We started awesome with a goal in the first 20 seconds.. and eventually went on to win 3-0.

We mix up with the Japanese for a photo after our final round game.

So 3rd in our pool with 3 wins and 2 losses put us up against Ontario Wildcats in the quarter finals.

Day 4:

Quarter Finals
2nd Pool A Ontario Wild Cats (CAN) 8 defeated 3rd Pool B Australia 0
Story: Unfortunately Wildcats came out with something to prove and belted us 8-0 in the quarter, so ended our tournament.

OVERALL
Unlike in Australia were the sport is rather unknown everyone in the small communities of CornerBrook and Deer Lake knew what broomball was. We had partial celeb status, with everyone stopping to talk to us, ask how we are going and if we wanted to come over for dinner. Kids asked for autographs and players from all the other countries wanted to party with us.
Just about all of us did radio and/or tv interviews and we were front page news every day of the week.
Over all it was a fantastic trip with a great bunch of people, I recomend this kind of trip to everyone.. get on it !!
